Why we opened this campaign
A donor and volunteer who has been with our foundation for a long time reached out to us with a heartbreaking story that we simply cannot ignore. We are sharing his letter and asking for your help. This is truly one of those cases where every minute, every single agora matters.
“Dear friends, shalom.Today, for the first time, I learned what the life of a Jewish child can cost when measured in numbers.
Today, my friend’s wife narrowly avoided having an abortion. Please, do not rush to judge. For a religious woman, a mother of three, to come to the conscious decision to terminate a fourth pregnancy, the circumstances must be unimaginably тяжелые.
You know how it happens: one small stone shifts, and suddenly the whole house begins to collapse. A young family, five years of marriage, three children, expecting a fourth. They never lived in luxury, but they managed to live honestly and with dignity, to help others, to give maaser, and to do good.
My friend ran a small business — and that business became the stone. Several court cases in a row, a massive debt of 30,000 shekels, the threat of prison — all of this forced him to flee the country. His wife and children were left behind.
The wife is a recent immigrant. All of her family lives abroad and cannot help. She survived from one coin to the next — and then a second stone fell. One of the children was diagnosed with autism. This means, first of all, that the child cannot attend a regular kindergarten, which means the mother is tied to the home. Yes, there are allowances, special schools and kindergartens, rehabilitation programs — but all of this takes time. The most optimistic estimate for receiving support is three months. Meanwhile, the rent debt has already reached 9,000 shekels.
The children are literally left without food. Every day in this woman’s life is an obstacle course: what can I put on the table for dinner? What can I buy toilet paper with? What do I choose — shampoo or cookies for the children?
Today, the abortion did not take place only because she could not find a babysitter. The procedure has been postponed for a week. My friend is desperate to return home — if only he could repay the debt, come back, and finally begin to provide for his family and care for his wife and children.
To save his wife from this step and to help this family climb out of the debt pit, they need 60,000 shekels.
Today is Tu BiShvat — the New Year of Trees. It is written that a person is like a tree. Even when in winter there are no leaves or fruit, there is always the potential that in summer it will bloom and bear abundant fruit.
So too a human being — even one not yet born — has limitless potential. Today we have the chance to give him the opportunity to fulfill it.”
