Quarantine has taught us many things:
Now imagine if the world is closed off for you and there are simply no opportunities. It’s like you’ve been wearing a mask that you cannot take off. And seeing people around you, brings up a hurricane of emotions storming inside of you, you want to say something, but no one can hear you. What will the world look like to you then, where no one can understand you? Cruel, angry, hostile?
Although the picture is not a very positive one, alas, it is a part of reality that we not all of always see. There are those among us who live this way. Not just in the pandemic, but always, from an early age, fighting a world that seems alien and strange.
They are wonderful, bright and very talented, but cut off due to their illness: autistic children. They come into this life like that, and like everyone else they need the care of their relatives and the acceptance of society. It is possible to identify autism in early childhood, but more often the disease is detected when the child is 3-5 years old. When the world of the whole family dynamic changes and the hard work begins.
And the sooner it starts, the more chances there are to hold on to the thread that connects the child's inner world with the larger world outside. Parents of such children fight for every smile, glance, gesture and word. Only in this way, step by step, autistic children gradually learn to live in a world that is completely normal for us. And for them - incomprehensible!
When communication problems are most evident in a family with an autistic child, the parents cannot simply ask, "What are you going to have breakfast?" or "What would you like to do?" Just imagine how much strength, love and patience one needs for a little child's soul to open up even a little bit.
So now, thanks to modern technology, such families have a chance to make their life easier. Giving their child a tool to help communicate their desires and fears. Specialists have developed programs that remove barriers in communication between a child and his parents and help them learn faster and more efficiently.
In special education institutions, the Ministry of Education allocates funds for one tablet with the most effective program. But despite this, it can not to be compared to the individual approach that is necessary for autistic children, since the program is formed according to the general needs of the group. And when they come home, the process, which must be going on all the time, is suspended.
It is very difficult to get a tablet and a program for free with the individual needs of each family, since the state's resources for these purposes are limited. Even if the child, having passed the commission, receives a positive answer, he can use the tablet only in kindergarten or school, he is not permitted to take it home. But how do you help such a child at home, how can they communicate with their parents, brothers and sisters?
The program, which is used in educational institutions, costs 1000 shekels. And the application that is needed for it only works on Apple tablets. Families with autistic children who turn to us for help are not able to buy everything at once to help the child keep in touch with the world.
There is some good news, too. They give a 50% discount on the program twice a year, and we were also able to settle on a decent price reduction for the tablets themselves and the protective accessories for them. This is also important, because the mood of any child can change, and for autists it is even more unpredictable. Even the most experienced parent will not always notice a change, nor a teacher or educator.
Therefore, we decided to help such families and buy everything at once: tablets, software, protective screens and cases, so that the gadgets will serve the children for a long time! The list of planned costs includes increased memory for tablets (from 128 GB) so that they can be used as efficiently as possible at home and easily connect to interactive whiteboards at school.
Why did we choose this particular program and tablets?
1. In kindergartens and schools, they study only on it, which means that parents have no choice of what to use at home. For autists, consistency and dependability are important. The child should see the same pictures at school, in the park, and at home.
2. In this program, advanced functionality helps children improve their communication skills with those around them in everyday life, and provides the highest level of development.
3. This is one of the few programs in Hebrew that is adapted to the needs of children from traditional families, which is not uncommon in Israel. There are special pictures in the program, for example, Shabbat and Netilat Yadaim, which are concepts in Judaism.
And today we turn to you, our benefactors, for help. Together let’s give children with autism a chance to come closer, if not to the whole world, then at least to their families. After all, family is one of the precious values that we have in this life.
Our foundation plans to purchase 10 tablets with programs for a total of 29,465 shekels.
Families who will be assisted under this project will be charged a personal contribution of 10% of the total cost for the complete set.
With all our heart, we want to collect the entire amount as soon as possible and help these families. Each of your shekels will go towards good, to clear the boundaries between the world and its bright and closed off children! Today we are opening the page and we cannot do it without you!
